Personal Trainer Near Muswell Hill: Studio Strength Past Highgate Wood
If you live in Muswell Hill and want a personal trainer with a proper strength set-up and a room to yourself, our private studio on Archway Road in Highgate is a short trip down the hill. The 43 and 134 buses run from Muswell Hill to Highgate station, which is about five minutes on foot from the studio, and on a dry morning the walk along Muswell Hill Road past Highgate Wood is a decent warm-up in itself. Sessions are 1-1 with me, Artem Olekhnovych, and the studio is booked to you alone for the hour. This post covers the practical side: getting there, when to train, and what a block of coaching looks like for N10.
Why look past Muswell Hill at all?
Muswell Hill has good fitness options of its own, and if one of them suits you, use it. Training closest to home usually wins. People tend to look further afield for one of three reasons:
- They want a barbell, not a class. A squat rack, plates, cable station and dumbbells in a room nobody else is using is less common than it should be.
- They want privacy. Some people simply train better without an audience, particularly when learning lifts for the first time or coming back after a long gap.
- The route fits their week. If you commute via Highgate station or drop children at school in Highgate, the studio sits on a journey you already make.
That last point matters more than most people expect. The best training location is the one you pass anyway.
Getting from Muswell Hill to the studio
The studio is on a corner of Archway Road, Highgate N6, in the same building as Highgate Cuts barbers. It is roughly five minutes on foot from Highgate tube station on the Northern line.
| Route | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Bus | The 43 or 134 from Muswell Hill to Highgate station, then a short walk | Wet mornings, tight schedules |
| Walk | Down Muswell Hill Road between Highgate Wood and Queen’s Wood, then onto Archway Road | Unhurried mornings; a built-in warm-up |
| Cycle | Quick downhill on the way in, a proper climb home | People who like a finisher they did not plan |
| Tube link | Train before or after work if you commute through Highgate station | Commuters into the City or West End |
Check TfL Journey Planner for current times. Allow a little extra on the first visit while you find the door.
When people from N10 tend to train
Hours are confirmed at opening, with early mornings and evenings set aside for training. In practice, Muswell Hill clients tend to fall into a few patterns:
- Before the commute. Train, shower at home or at work, then on to the Northern line. This only works if you can protect bedtime the night before.
- After the school drop-off. For people with flexible or hybrid work, the mid-morning slot is often the quietest in the week.
- On the way home. Get off at Highgate, train, then a ten-minute bus up the hill. Good for people who need the session to separate work from home.
Whichever you pick, pick it for the same days each week. Consistency comes from a fixed slot far more reliably than from motivation. There is more on choosing a time in morning or evening workouts.
What you get in the studio
The training floor is in the lower ground of the building, about 1,000 square feet, and it is used for coached sessions only. Nobody else is lifting while you are there. The kit is chosen for strength training rather than variety for its own sake:
- Squat rack, barbell and plates
- A full dumbbell rack
- Two-stack cable station, lat pulldown and seated row
- Air bike for conditioning
- InBody scanner for body composition
That covers everything most people need: squatting, hinging, pressing, pulling, carrying and short, hard conditioning work. For a fuller picture of what private sessions should include, read what private 1-1 training should include.
Who the studio suits
I have coached for over ten years and trained since I was fifteen. Most of the people I work with are busy professionals over thirty, many with children, demanding jobs or both. Typical starting points:
- You used to train, stopped when life filled up, and want to return without hurting yourself.
- You run, cycle or play tennis and want strength work that supports it rather than wrecks it.
- You have never lifted a barbell and want to learn it properly in a quiet room.
- You are in your forties or fifties and want to keep muscle and strength as you age.
If you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, a recent injury or operation, are pregnant or postnatal, or have not exercised for a long time, check with your GP before starting and let me know what they said.
How a coaching block runs
A typical start looks like this:
- Email us with your goal and the days that suit you.
- First session: a conversation about history, goals and your week, a movement check, an optional InBody scan, and a first, moderate workout.
- Weeks 1 to 4: learning the main lifts and settling the routine, usually two sessions a week.
- Weeks 5 to 12: progressing loads, adding conditioning, and building in what you do between sessions.
- Twelve-week review: what has changed, what is next, and how often you want to train from here.
If you are comparing options in the area, our neighbouring guide for Crouch End covers the same studio from the other direction, and how to choose a personal trainer is worth reading before you commit to anyone.
Making the trip worth it
A journey of fifteen or twenty minutes each way is fine, but only if you use the time in the studio well. A few habits help:
- Arrive changed, so the hour is spent training.
- Eat something light an hour or two before an early session.
- Book the same slot each week so it lives in the diary, not in your head.
- If you have a haircut due, the barbers are upstairs, so one trip can cover both.
Questions we get asked
Is there parking near the studio?
Archway Road is a busy main road, so most clients come by bus, tube, bike or on foot. Check local parking restrictions before you drive.
Can I use the studio on my own?
No. The studio is for coached personal training only and is not available for solo use or hire.
How often should I train?
Two sessions a week suits most people to start. One works if you also train on your own in between.
How do I book?
By email for now. Online booking is coming soon.
For details of sessions and availability, see the personal training page or the Highgate House homepage. If Muswell Hill to Highgate sounds like a trip you would actually make, private training with Artem is the next step.
