Personal Trainer Near Tufnell Park: Two Stops to a Private Studio

October 15, 2026•6 min read

If you live or work around Tufnell Park and want a personal trainer without the noise of a commercial gym, our private studio in Highgate is two stops north on the Northern line: Tufnell Park, Archway, Highgate. From Highgate station it is about a five-minute walk to the studio on Archway Road. Personal training sessions are 1-1 with Artem Olekhnovych, in a basement room booked to you alone, with a full set of strength equipment. This guide covers the practical side: getting there, fitting sessions around a Tufnell Park routine, and what you actually get when you arrive.

The journey, honestly

Tufnell Park, Archway and Highgate are all on the High Barnet branch of the Northern line, so there is no change of train. You travel two stops north, and from Highgate station the studio is roughly five minutes on foot. Buses also run along the Archway Road corridor, and for those near the top of Dartmouth Park the walk or cycle up is a fair option on a dry morning. The TfL journey planner will give you the timings from your own front door.

The point is not that it is the closest gym to you. There are gyms nearer most Tufnell Park streets. The point is that it is close enough to fit into a working day, and different enough from a busy gym to be worth the two stops.

Why people travel past nearer gyms

Most of the people I train already have a gym membership somewhere, or have had several. What they lacked was not access to equipment. It was a plan, someone to check their technique, and a reason to turn up when work is heavy. A busy commercial floor makes all three harder: you queue for the rack, adapt your plan to whatever is free, and nobody notices whether you came.

A private studio removes the friction. The room is yours for the session, everything is set up before you arrive, and there is no waiting for kit. We explore the wider argument in private gym in North London, so I will not repeat it here.

Fitting training around a Tufnell Park week

Tufnell Park has a lot of people who work from home some days and travel into town on others. That pattern is useful. Some practical shapes that work:

Your week When to train Why it works
Office days in town, home days in between Early morning on home days Two stops up, train, back at your desk without a commute
Fully office-based in central London Evening, on the way home Stay on the train two extra stops rather than doubling back
School run in the mornings Straight after drop-off, or evenings A fixed slot that does not compete with family time
Unpredictable hours Two fixed slots plus a back-up The back-up stops one bad week from becoming a lost month

Hours are announced at opening, with early mornings and evenings set aside for training. Two sessions a week is a strong starting rhythm for most people. More on frequency in how often to see a personal trainer.

Making the trip stick

The biggest threat to any training plan is not the distance. It is the week when work gets heavy, the trip starts to feel like an effort, and one cancelled session quietly becomes three. A few habits make the two stops feel automatic rather than optional:

  • Same days, same times. A fixed Tuesday and Friday slot becomes part of the week, like the school run or a standing meeting.
  • Pack the night before. Trainers, a top and a water bottle by the door removes one more decision at 6.30am.
  • Treat it like a client meeting. Put it in the work calendar, not just your personal one, so colleagues book around it.
  • Use the journey. Two stops is enough time to read your notes from the last session and know what you are aiming for.

People who train consistently for a year rarely have more willpower than anyone else. They usually just have fewer decisions to make each time.

What is in the studio

The basement is about 1,000 sq ft, and during your session nobody else is training in it. The equipment is chosen for proper strength work rather than variety for its own sake:

  • Squat rack, barbell and plates
  • Dumbbell rack
  • Two-stack cable station
  • Lat pulldown and seated row
  • Air bike for conditioning
  • InBody body composition scanner

That is enough to train every major movement pattern well, and the cable station in particular makes it easy to adjust exercises around old injuries or stiff joints.

What sessions look like

  1. The first meeting is mostly conversation and assessment: your history, injuries, work pattern, goals, and a baseline body composition scan.
  2. Early sessions teach the main lifts at weights that let you learn the technique properly.
  3. From around week three the load and difficulty rise in small, planned steps.
  4. Every few weeks we review progress against the scan, your lifts and how you feel day to day, and adjust.

Artem has more than ten years of coaching behind him, has trained since he was 15, and works mainly with busy professionals over 30. Check with your GP first if you have a heart condition, are pregnant, have a significant injury, or are coming back to exercise after a long break.

You can read more about the approach, and see prices, on the personal training page.

A quick checklist before you email

  • Which days are you at home and which in the office?
  • Do you prefer mornings or evenings?
  • Any injuries, operations or conditions we should know about?
  • What do you want to be different in three months?

Put those in your first email and we can suggest times straight away. If you are a little further down the line, our page on training near Kentish Town covers that journey, which is one stop longer.

Questions we get asked

How far is the studio from Tufnell Park station?

Two stops north on the Northern line to Highgate, then about five minutes on foot to Archway Road.

Can I train before work and still get into town on time?

Yes, for most people. Train early, then head straight back down the Northern line.

Is the studio shared with other clients during my session?

No. The room is booked to you alone for your session.

Can I use the studio on my own between sessions?

No. The studio is for coached personal training only, which is how it stays quiet and private.
