Barber Near Crouch End: Why Locals Head Up the Hill to Archway Road
If you live in Crouch End and want a barber who books you in properly and takes time over the assessment, Highgate Cuts is a short trip up the hill on Archway Road, Highgate N6, about five minutes from Highgate tube. From the Broadway it is a walk of roughly 20 to 25 minutes, most of it uphill, or a pleasant detour along the Parkland Walk. This post covers the practical side for N8 residents: the routes, when the trip makes sense, how to fit it around a Crouch End week, and what to book so the journey is worth it.
Why make the trip at all
Crouch End has no shortage of places to get a haircut. The honest reason people travel a little further for a barber is consistency. Once you find someone who understands how your hair grows, where your crown sits and how short you like the back, a 20 minute walk is a small price for not having to explain it all again every five weeks.
The other reason is the kind of visit. At Highgate Cuts every appointment starts with an assessment: the barber looks at your hair, asks what you need from it, and makes recommendations before a clipper is switched on. That suits men who are not sure what they want, who are growing something out, or whose last few cuts have drifted. If you want to know what to look for in any barber, our guide to finding the best barber in Highgate goes through it in detail.
Getting here from Crouch End
Crouch End has no tube station, which is why the hill matters. Here are the realistic options.
| Route | Best for | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| On foot via the side roads | Most people, most days | Steady climb from the Broadway towards Highgate; allow 20 to 25 minutes |
| Parkland Walk | Dry weekends, unhurried visits | Comes out on Holmesdale Road, then a short climb up to Archway Road |
| Bus | Rain, heavy shopping bags | Routes change; check the TfL journey planner from your street |
| Bike | Quick weekday trips | The hill is real; bring a lock |
The Parkland Walk route
The Parkland Walk follows the old railway line that once ran from Finsbury Park to Highgate, and it has been a Local Nature Reserve since 1990. It passes under the Crouch End Hill bridge by the remains of the old Crouch End station platforms, then continues towards Highgate and comes out on Holmesdale Road, just before the old tunnels, which are closed to walkers. From there you walk up to Archway Road. It is muddy after rain and slower than the roads, but in autumn it turns a haircut into a decent walk.
Walking by road
Most Crouch End regulars simply walk up through the residential streets towards Highgate. It is uphill most of the way, so leave a few minutes spare and do not book back-to-back with something at the other end of N8. Arriving a little warm is fine; arriving five minutes late eats into your own appointment.
When the trip makes most sense
Because it is a short journey rather than a pop-in, Crouch End clients tend to plan visits a little more deliberately. A few patterns work well:
- Saturday mornings. Walk up, get the cut done, and you are back on the Broadway for lunch. Book a week or so ahead, as weekend slots go first anywhere.
- On the way to or from the tube. If you commute via Highgate station, a cut before or after work avoids a separate trip entirely. Ask about early and evening times when you email.
- Combined services. If you are coming up anyway, it is worth having the beard done at the same visit. Our post on a haircut and beard trim together explains how that visit runs.
- Before something important. An interview, a wedding, a set of photographs. Give yourself a few days after the cut so it settles, rather than going the morning of.
What to book, and how long to allow
The barber services at Highgate Cuts are skin fades, scissor cuts, beard work and hot towel shaves. Your total time is the travel plus the service plus a few minutes either side, so it helps to know roughly what each involves.
- Skin fade. Precision work at the sides and back, blended up to whatever length you keep on top. Fades grow out visibly within a couple of weeks, so men who wear them short tend to come back more often than with other cuts.
- Scissor cut. Softer at the sides, more forgiving as it grows. Good if you only want to make the trip every five or six weeks.
- Beard work. Shape, length and the neckline and cheek lines set properly, so you can maintain them yourself for a few weeks.
- Hot towel shave. Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the shave itself. It is the one service where rushing defeats the point, so do not squeeze it before a train.
Prices are not published yet. See the barber menu when it goes live, or email us and we will tell you.
Making repeat visits easy from N8
The men who get the most out of any barber are the ones who rebook before they leave. From Crouch End, that matters more, because the trip is easier to put off. A sensible routine looks like this:
- Decide your interval with the barber at the end of the cut, based on the style rather than a habit. Short fades and long scissor cuts do not run on the same clock.
- Email to book the next slot that week, not when it already looks overdue.
- Keep your neckline tidy at home in between if you know how; our guide to keeping a haircut sharp between visits covers what is safe to do yourself and what to leave alone.
- If something about the last cut did not work, say so at the next assessment. A barber can only adjust what they know about.
A note for families in Crouch End
Plenty of Crouch End households have more than one head that needs cutting. If you want to bring a son along, mention his age and what he usually has when you email, so the right time can be set aside. Children do best when the appointment is not rushed, which is another reason to book rather than turn up.
Upstairs and downstairs
The Highgate House is one corner building with two quite different things going on. Highgate Cuts is on the ground floor. Below it is a private studio for 1-1 personal training with Artem Olekhnovych, booked to one person at a time. If you are already making the trip up from Crouch End, it is worth knowing both exist. You can read more on the home page of The Highgate House.
