Barber Near Highgate Village: A Proper Cut Just Down the Hill

October 15, 2026•6 min read

If you live in or around Highgate Village and want a barber you can walk to, Highgate Cuts is on Archway Road, about five minutes from Highgate tube station and a short walk down the hill from the High Street. We do skin fades, scissor cuts, beard work and hot towel shaves, and every visit starts with the barber assessing your hair before anything is cut. This post is for village residents specifically: the easiest ways down, the kind of cut that suits village life, and how to turn a haircut into something you never have to plan.

Why a village resident would come down the hill

The village is very good at many things: pubs, bookshops, a green, a cemetery people fly in to see. What most residents want from a barber is less romantic. They want someone consistent, a cut that looks the same in week three as it did in week one, and an appointment that slots into a normal day without a car or a long journey.

Archway Road happens to be the road many village households already use, for the tube, for the buses into town, or as the route out to the North Circular. A barber there is on the way to something rather than a trip in itself. That is the whole argument, and it is a practical one.

Getting down from the village

There is no single right route. It depends on where in the village you start and whether you are walking back up afterwards.

  • From the High Street or Pond Square. Southwood Lane runs down from the village towards Jacksons Lane and the station area. It is the most direct walking route for many people and quieter than the main road.
  • From the North Road side. North Hill drops down to Archway Road further north. Useful if you live towards the Highgate School end.
  • From the Highgate Hill or Waterlow Park side. You can drop down towards Archway and come up Archway Road, though for most people Southwood Lane is simpler.
  • By bus. Several routes link the village with Archway Road. Check the TfL journey planner for the current option from your street.

Most village addresses are a walk of somewhere between ten and twenty minutes, depending on where you start. The catch is obvious to anyone who lives there: the walk down is easy, the walk back is uphill. Plenty of people time the cut so they carry on somewhere else afterwards, the tube into town, Highgate Wood, or the studio downstairs, rather than climbing straight back.

We do not publish a street number yet. When you email to book, we reply with exactly where to find us.

The cuts the village tends to ask for

Every head is different and the barber’s assessment decides the final cut. But there are patterns in what people in N6 tend to want, and they lean classic.

If your week involves A cut worth considering Why
Client meetings, video calls, a conservative office Scissor cut or a scissor-over-comb short back and sides Neat from every angle, grows out gracefully, no hard lines
Little time in the morning A short crop or a tapered cut with texture on top Needs a towel and a finger of product at most
Grey or thinning hair Shorter overall, with weight kept where the hair is strongest Avoids the wispy look that length exaggerates
A beard you want to keep tidy Haircut and beard work in one visit The sideburn and beard line are shaped together, so they match
Wanting something sharper A low fade Clean but quiet; reads as deliberate rather than fashionable

For more on the softer end of that range, our piece on scissor over comb explains the technique behind a gentler short cut, and the guide to haircuts for men over 50 covers what changes as hair gets finer or greyer.

What happens when you arrive

The first few minutes at Highgate Cuts are the assessment. The barber looks at your hair, how it grows (crown, cowlicks, hairline), how you wear it and what you need from it, then makes recommendations. You agree a plan before anything is cut. This is where you mention the things that matter in your week, such as a formal event, a dislike of product, or that you want to stretch to five weeks between visits.

A hot towel shave, if you add one, takes 20 to 30 minutes. A cut and beard together takes longer than either alone. If you are fitting the visit around something fixed, say so when you email and we will suggest a slot that leaves room. You can see the full range on our Highgate barber services page.

Making it a routine rather than an errand

The difference between a cut that always looks good and one that is perpetually overdue is rarely the barber. It is the gap between appointments. A short checklist that works well for village residents:

  1. Agree your interval in the chair. Ask the barber how many weeks your cut will hold its shape. Short fades need two to three; a scissor cut may hold four to six.
  2. Book the next one before you leave. Same day of the week, same time. It becomes as fixed as the bin collection.
  3. Anchor it to something you do on Archway Road anyway. A regular train into town, a weekday working from home, a session in the training studio downstairs.
  4. Plan the walk back. If climbing the hill afterwards puts you off, pair the cut with an onward journey.
  5. Keep one note on your phone. The lengths and details of the cut you liked. Useful if anything ever changes.

Two floors, one trip

The Highgate House is a single corner building. Highgate Cuts is on the ground floor. Below it is a private one-to-one training studio run by Artem Olekhnovych, booked to you alone for your session. They are separate services, but for village residents who would rather not make the hill climb twice a week, combining a session and a cut is a reasonable use of one journey. The studio is coached personal training only, not a gym you can drop into.

Questions we get asked

Do you take walk-ins?

Booking is by email for now, with online booking coming soon. Emailing ahead is the reliable way to get a time that suits you.

How much is a haircut?

We have not published prices yet. See the barber menu when it is live, or email us and we will tell you.

Is it worth coming down from the village rather than going further afield?

That is your call, but a barber you can walk to is one you will actually visit on schedule. Consistency does more for a haircut than almost anything else.

Can you cut children’s hair?

Email us with your child’s age and what they need and we will let you know. Our guide to kids at the barber covers what makes a good visit for younger clients.
