Haircut Before Eid: Booking Ahead of the Busiest Days

October 15, 2026•6 min read

If you want a fresh cut for Eid, book as soon as the likely date is known, aim for a slot one to two days before, and avoid relying on the final evening. The last day or two before Eid al-Fitr in particular are among the busiest of the barber’s year, and because the exact date depends on the moon sighting, many men end up trying to get a chair on the same night. A fade looks sharpest within a few days of cutting, so you lose very little by going a day early, and you gain an unhurried appointment. The rest of this guide covers timing, what to ask for, and how to plan a beard alongside the haircut.

Why the days before Eid get so busy

Barbers see a few predictable peaks: Christmas week, the end of the summer holidays, and the run-up to both Eids. Eid al-Fitr is the sharper of the two, because it follows a month in which many customers have adjusted their routines and put off non-essential appointments. Then the announcement comes, often only the evening before, and a large share of a shop’s regulars want the same short window.

The Islamic calendar is lunar, so Eid moves roughly 11 days earlier each year in the Gregorian calendar. That means the rush lands in a different season every few years, sometimes clashing with school holidays, sometimes with the working week. It is worth checking the expected dates early rather than assuming last year’s timing.

When to book, and for which day

A sensible plan for most cuts:

  1. Two to three weeks before: note the expected date and the day either side of it. Send your booking email then, naming two or three preferred times.
  2. One to two days before: the ideal day for the appointment. Hair has a few hours to settle, any slight line irritation calms down, and you are not racing the clock.
  3. The final evening: treat this as a back-up, not a plan. It is the most in-demand slot of the period.

Why not a week early? With a short fade, a week of growth softens the gradient noticeably, especially at the lowest guard lengths. With a longer scissor cut or a classic short back and sides, a week early is fine. The shorter the sides, the faster the shape goes.

Booking at Highgate Cuts is by email for now. Tell us the service, the day that suits and whether you can be flexible, and we will come back with times. The barber page lists the services; the menu has details, or simply email us to ask.

What to ask for

Eid often means family photographs, new or traditional clothes, and a long day of visits. That shapes the cut more than people expect.

Fades

Most men want a fade with a clean outline. If you are booking a day or two ahead, a skin fade will still look crisp on the day. If you can only make it four or five days before, ask about a slightly longer starting length at the bottom, such as a shadow fade, which grows out more gracefully. See skin fade vs shadow fade for the difference.

The line-up

A sharp hairline and temple edge make a cut look fresh. Ask for it to follow your natural line rather than being pushed back. Over-cut edges look harsh in photos and take weeks to grow back.

Under a cap or kufi

If you will wear a cap for prayers, mention it. The barber can keep the top a little shorter or lighter so it sits well, and avoid leaving a ridge where the cap edge falls.

Planning the beard

For many customers the beard matters as much as the hair. A few things worth knowing:

  • Book them together. A haircut and beard trim in one visit means the fade and the beard blend properly at the sideburns. More on that in haircut and beard trim together.
  • Say what you want to keep. If length matters to you, say so at the start. A good barber will tidy the shape, neckline and cheek line without taking length you want to keep.
  • Do not reshape for the first time on Eid week. If you are trying a new beard shape, do it a few weeks earlier so you can live with it first.
  • Sensitive skin: if you react to close razor work, ask for the cheek and neck lines with a trimmer rather than a blade, and avoid a very close shave in the day before.

A hot towel shave takes 20 to 30 minutes with us, so if you want one alongside a haircut, mention it when booking so the slot is long enough.

What happens at the appointment

Every visit starts with an assessment. The barber looks at your hair, the way it grows, the shape of your head and beard, and what you need it to do over the next few days, then makes recommendations. It takes a couple of minutes and saves a lot of misunderstanding, particularly when you are short of time.

To make the most of a busy-period slot:

  • Arrive on time with your hair dry and free of heavy product.
  • Bring a photo if you want something specific.
  • Tell the barber which day the cut needs to look best.
  • If you need to cancel, let us know as early as you can, because someone else will want the time.

Bringing children

Boys often need a cut before Eid too. Booking back-to-back chairs, or consecutive slots, saves a second trip. Younger children usually do best earlier in the day and earlier in the week, before the rush. Our notes on father and son haircuts cover how to arrange it.

A simple Eid grooming checklist

  • Expected date noted and booking email sent two to three weeks ahead
  • Appointment one to two days before, with the final evening only as back-up
  • Haircut and beard booked together
  • Any new style tried well in advance
  • Beard oil or balm at home for the morning itself
  • Children’s cuts booked in the same window

Highgate Cuts is on Archway Road in Highgate, about five minutes from Highgate tube, and handy for customers from Archway, Crouch End and Muswell Hill. If you want a barber in Highgate for Eid, the earlier you email, the more choice of times you will have.

Questions we get asked

How many days before Eid should I get a haircut?

One to two days before suits most styles. Short fades are best within that window; longer scissor cuts can be done up to a week ahead.

Can I just walk in on the night before Eid?

It is the busiest slot of the period, so do not count on it. Booking ahead by email is far more reliable.

Will the barber keep my beard length?

Yes, if you say so. Tell the barber at the start what length you want to keep and they will shape around it.

Should I get a hot towel shave before Eid?

If you are used to them, a day or two before is ideal. If your skin is sensitive and you have never had one, try it at another time first.
