Haircuts That Sit Well Under a Flat Cap or a Trilby

October 15, 2026•6 min read

The best haircut for a flat cap or a trilby is short and tidy at the sides and back, with only moderate length on top, cut with scissors so it falls naturally rather than standing up. Under a hat, what people see is the hair below the brim: the sideburns, the area over the ears and the neckline. Those need to be neat. On top, too much length gets crushed into a flat, damp mat; too little and the cut looks severe when you take the hat off indoors. A classic short back and sides, a tapered scissor cut, or a short textured crop all work well, with a light matte product or none at all.

What a hat actually does to your hair

Any hat that sits close to the head presses the hair flat, traps warmth and a little moisture, and leaves a line where the band sits. That is the hat hair everyone recognises. How bad it looks depends on three things:

  • Length on top. Longer hair has more to flatten and takes longer to recover.
  • Product. Heavy, shiny products go sticky and stay in whatever shape the hat leaves them.
  • Where the band sits. A flat cap sits low at the back and across the forehead; a trilby sits higher and further back. Hair right at the band line is what dents.

The aim of a hat-friendly cut is to keep that band area short enough that there is little to dent, and the top light enough that it recovers with a run of the fingers.

Cuts that work

The classic short back and sides

Short at the sides and back, a little more on top, tapered at the neck. It is the haircut flat caps were made for, and it is still the safest choice. Below the brim, it looks clean. With the hat off, it looks like a proper haircut rather than a squashed one.

The tapered scissor cut

Similar shape, but cut with scissors throughout, so the sides are slightly longer and softer. Good if you do not want the sides very short, or your hair sticks out when cut close. Our article on why more men are choosing a full scissor cut explains the difference in finish.

The short textured crop

Short on top with texture cut in, often with a short fringe. Hat hair barely shows, because there is little length to flatten and the texture hides dents.

Longer hair, done deliberately

Collar-length hair under a flat cap can look excellent, but only when it is cut to fall that way: layered, with the ends trimmed and the outline tidy. The hair coming out below the cap is what people see, so it needs to look deliberate rather than escaped.

What to avoid

  • High-volume quiffs and pompadours. These are built to stand up. A hat defeats them, and they rarely recover in the office loo.
  • Very high skin fades with a lot on top. Under a hat you see bare skin and a crushed top, with nothing in between.
  • Heavy, shiny pomade. It flattens and sets. Matte, lighter products are kinder.
  • Overgrown necklines. Hair curling up over a collar under a cap looks untidy faster than anything else.

Flat cap or trilby: small differences

Flat cap Trilby
Where it sits Low on the forehead, close round the back Higher, set back on the head
What shows Sideburns, around the ears, neckline Sides, neckline, sometimes the front hairline
Key detail in the cut A neat taper at the nape Tidy sides and a clean front if any shows
Fringe Keep it short or it pokes out under the peak More forgiving, as the brim sits higher

What to tell your barber

Every visit at Highgate Cuts starts with an assessment, where the barber looks at your hair and what you need before making a recommendation. Mentioning the hat early changes the advice. Useful things to say:

  1. “I wear a flat cap most days” (or a trilby, or both). It is not obvious unless you bring it.
  2. Bring the hat. Put it on in the chair so the barber can see exactly where the band and brim sit.
  3. Ask for a tapered neckline rather than a blocked one, so it stays tidy as it grows.
  4. Say how you want it to look indoors. Office, restaurant, client meetings. The cut has to work both ways.
  5. Ask about texture on top if your hair is fine and flattens easily.

If you are unsure how to describe the style itself, our guide on how to tell your barber what you want helps.

Dealing with hat hair on the day

  • Put the hat on dry hair. A damp head under a hat sets dents in place.
  • Use less product, and matte. A small amount of clay or texture powder holds shape without gluing hair into the dent.
  • Take it off with a lift, not a drag. Pulling it back drags the hair with it.
  • Fingers, not a comb. A quick rub through with your fingers at the band line breaks the dent. A comb tends to flatten it further.
  • A drop of water on your fingertips fixes most of what is left.
  • Get a hat that fits. Too tight leaves a deep line and can be uncomfortable. Too loose and you keep pressing it down.

Does wearing a hat cause hair loss?

A normally fitting hat does not. Male pattern hair loss is very common and largely runs in families; the NHS page on hair loss explains the usual causes and when to see a GP. Very tight headwear worn constantly can pull on the hair, but that is a different matter from a cap. We cover it in more detail in does wearing a cap cause hair loss. If your hair is thinning, a shorter hat-friendly cut is often the most flattering choice anyway.

How often to get it cut

Because the sides and neckline are what show, they are what goes first. For a short back and sides, every three to five weeks keeps it tidy under a brim. A longer scissor cut can go six to eight weeks with a neck tidy in between. Book your next appointment before you leave and it stops being something you have to remember. Questions we get asked

Can I wear a flat cap with long hair?

Yes, if the hair below the cap is cut to look deliberate: layered, trimmed and with a tidy outline.

How do I stop hat hair?

Keep the top moderate, use light matte product or none, put the hat on dry hair and break the dent with your fingers.
