Haircuts and Beards for Ginger Hair: Making the Most of the Colour

October 15, 2026•6 min read

Ginger hair is already the most noticeable thing about a haircut, so the best styles keep the shape clean and let the colour do the work. Cuts with some length on top (a textured crop, a side parting, a short scissor cut) show off the colour’s depth, while very short cuts and skin fades tend to make it look lighter and can expose a pale scalp. Beards often come in a different shade from the hair, sometimes redder, sometimes blonder, and a good trim balances the two rather than fighting them. And because fair skin often goes with red hair, sun protection on a short cut matters more than usual.

What makes ginger hair different to cut

Red hair is not just a colour. A few practical features affect how it looks after a cut:

  • It reads lighter when short. Close to the scalp, individual hairs let skin show through, and ginger hair against pale skin can almost disappear. Longer hair shows the full depth of colour.
  • The colour varies across the head. It is common for the sides, crown and beard to be different shades. Short cuts reveal those differences; longer cuts blend them.
  • It can be coarse and thick. Many redheads find their hair has a strong texture or a slight wave, which affects how it sits.
  • Greys show differently. As red hair loses pigment it often fades towards strawberry blonde or sandy before turning white, rather than going a sharp grey.

Haircuts that suit ginger hair

Textured crop

Short sides and a forward-falling textured top. The texture creates light and shadow in the hair, which shows the colour’s range. Keep the fade low or opt for a taper, so the sides do not go too light.

Classic side parting with a taper

A smart, professional cut. The longer top shows off the colour, and the taper keeps the sides neat without exposing much scalp.

Short scissor cut

An even, natural shape with enough length all over for the colour to stay rich. Works particularly well with a short beard.

Longer, swept-back styles

If you have the density, longer ginger hair can look striking. It needs regular trims to keep the ends healthy and the shape intentional.

Buzz cuts and fades: with care

These can work, especially paired with a full beard, but expect a lighter, sandier look and more visible scalp. A number three or four buzz usually looks better than a number one. If you go for a fade, keep it low. Our guide to crew cut vs buzz cut explains what a little extra length does.

Beards: when the colour does not match

A beard that is redder, blonder or more mixed than your hair is completely normal. Hair colour is controlled separately in different areas, and the beard often has more red pigment than the scalp. Our article on a beard that is a different colour from your hair covers why.

The question is how to make it look deliberate.

  • Match the length to the contrast. If the beard is much brighter than the hair, a shorter beard keeps it from dominating. If the hair is the stronger colour, a fuller beard balances it.
  • Keep edges clean. A sharp cheek line and neckline make any colour look intentional. A ragged edge on a bright beard draws attention for the wrong reasons.
  • Blend the sideburns. Where the hair meets the beard, a smooth fade from hair colour into beard colour avoids an abrupt line.
  • Watch patches. Lighter hairs can make a beard look patchier than it is. A slightly shorter length often looks fuller.

A quick pairing guide

Hair Beard that tends to suit
Textured crop, deep copper Short boxed beard or heavy stubble
Short buzz, light ginger Fuller beard to add weight and colour
Side parting, strawberry blond Neat short beard with defined lines
Longer swept-back style Medium beard, rounded or squared at the chin

Looking after ginger hair and skin

Sun protection

Fair skin, freckles and red hair often go together, and the NHS notes that people with red or fair hair and pale skin are more likely to burn. With a short cut, the scalp and the back of the neck are exposed. Use sun cream on any skin a short cut uncovers, or wear a hat in strong sun. Our guide to protecting your scalp on a short cut goes into detail, and the NHS sun safety guidance covers the basics. If you notice a mole or patch on your scalp or neck that is new or changing, see your GP.

Keeping the colour bright

  • Use a mild shampoo and do not wash more often than you need to.
  • Rinse out chlorine after swimming; it can dull the colour over time.
  • Strong sun lightens red hair noticeably over a summer, especially at the ends.

Beard care

Ginger beards are often coarse. A few drops of beard oil after washing softens them and helps the skin underneath, which can be prone to dryness and redness.

What to tell your barber

At Highgate Cuts every visit starts with an assessment: the barber looks at your hair and beard, how the colours sit together and what you need, then makes recommendations. Useful things to mention:

  1. Whether you want the colour to stand out or prefer it toned down by shape.
  2. How short you are happy to go on the sides, bearing in mind it will look lighter.
  3. Any sensitivity or redness on the skin, especially before a shave.
  4. Whether you want the beard to match the hair or be its own feature.

We cut and shape; we do not offer colour services, so the aim is always to make the most of your natural shade. Our barbers in Highgate handle cuts, beard work and hot towel shaves.

Questions we get asked

What haircut suits ginger hair best?

Cuts with some length on top, such as a textured crop or a side parting with a taper, show the colour best.

Why is my beard redder than my hair?

Different areas of hair often carry different amounts of red pigment. It is very common and nothing to worry about.

Do skin fades work on ginger hair?

They can, but the faded area will look much lighter. A low fade or a taper usually looks more balanced.

Does ginger hair go grey?

It usually fades gradually towards sandy or strawberry blond before turning white, so changes are often subtle.
