Haircuts for Shorter Men: Cuts That Add a Little Height
A haircut can add a couple of centimetres of visible height and, more usefully, make your whole frame look longer and leaner. The formula is simple: some volume on top, styled upward, with sides kept short and clean so the head looks taller and narrower. The quiff, the brush up, a textured crop with lift, the pompadour and a side part with height all do this well. What works against you is width at the sides, flat hair, and long, heavy styles that pull the eye downward. A tidy neckline and good posture finish the job.
None of this is about pretending to be taller. It is about proportion, and a good barber thinks about it for every client.
How a haircut changes perceived height
The eye reads a figure from the top down, and the shape of the head sets the first impression. Two things matter:
- Vertical lines. Hair that rises from the forehead and crown extends the silhouette upward. Even a modest lift of two or three centimetres changes the outline.
- Narrowness. Short, tight sides make the head look longer relative to its width. Bulky sides do the opposite and make the head, and by extension the whole frame, look broader and more compact.
Together these create a longer, cleaner line from head to shoulders. It is the same principle as wearing well-fitted clothes rather than baggy ones.
Cuts that add height
The quiff
Length at the front, roughly five to eight centimetres, blow-dried up and back with a light product. Short sides, often a taper or fade. It adds the most visible height of any everyday cut and works for most hair types with enough density.
The brush up
Shorter than a quiff and more casual: the whole top is brushed upward rather than sculpted. Easier to style in the morning and still gives clear lift. Our guide to the brush up covers how to ask for it.
Textured crop with lift
A French crop is usually worn forward, which does not add height. Cut with more texture and a little extra length, and styled slightly up at the front, it becomes a low-maintenance way to add lift without a full quiff.
Pompadour
The classic version of the quiff, swept back with more structure and shine. It adds a lot of height but needs a few minutes of styling and suits men comfortable with a bolder look.
Side part with height
A traditional side part with a little lift at the front gives a smart, office-friendly option with some vertical line.
Sides: fade, taper or scissor cut
Tight sides make the top look taller, but how tight is a matter of taste and face shape.
| Sides | Effect on height | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Skin or high fade | Strongest contrast, most height | Oval and round faces, bolder look |
| Mid or low taper | Clear lift, softer | Most men, office settings |
| Short scissor cut | Moderate | Long or narrow faces, classic styles |
If your face is already long and narrow, very tight sides can over-lengthen it. In that case, a little more weight at the sides keeps things balanced. Our comparison of the fade and the undercut explains the difference between the two most common short-sided options.
What tends to work against you
- Long, heavy hair that falls around the face and shoulders pulls the eye downward.
- Width at the sides, such as puffy, grown-out sides, makes the head look wider and the frame shorter.
- Flat, forward styles such as a heavy fringe sit low and add no vertical line.
- Very tall, exaggerated styles can look like over-compensation. Moderate lift looks natural.
- A bushy beard with a low neckline adds weight to the lower face. If you have a beard, keep it neat and the sides short.
Styling for height in two minutes
- Towel-dry until damp, not wet.
- Apply a small amount of light product, such as a sea salt spray or mousse, at the roots.
- Blow-dry on medium heat, lifting the front up and back with your fingers or a brush. This is the step most men skip, and it is where most of the height comes from.
- Finish with a pea-sized amount of matt clay or paste worked through the top.
- Avoid heavy, wet-look gels that weigh hair down.

The details that also help
A clean neckline. A tidy taper at the nape lengthens the neck. A fuzzy, overgrown neckline makes the neck look shorter.
Regular trims. Height-adding cuts rely on short sides. Once the sides grow out, the effect fades. Every three to four weeks keeps the proportions right.
Monochrome clothing and good posture do more for perceived height than any cut, but a good haircut adds to both.
If your hair is fine or thinning
Height is harder to build with fine hair, but not impossible. A slightly shorter top, around four to five centimetres, holds lift better than a long one that collapses under its own weight. Texture cutting with scissors or a point-cut finish gives the hair more grip, and a light, matt product at the roots does more than a heavy wax. A blow-dry is close to essential here. If the crown is thinning, a brush up or textured crop usually works better than a sculpted quiff, which can draw attention to the crown.
What happens when you come in
At Highgate Cuts on Archway Road, every visit starts with an assessment. The barber looks at your hair type and density, your face shape, how your hair grows at the crown and front, and how much time you want to spend styling it, then recommends a cut. Saying “I’d like a bit of height on top” is enough; a good barber will know how to build it for your hair. Fine or thinning hair needs a different approach to thick, coarse hair, and texture cutting can make a real difference to how much lift you get. Services are on the barber menu.
Questions we get asked
What is the best haircut to look taller?
A quiff or brush up with short, tidy sides is the most reliable, because it adds vertical line and keeps the head narrow.
Do fades make you look taller?
They help by narrowing the sides, so the top looks taller. The effect is strongest when paired with some volume on top.
Can a short haircut add height?
Yes. You only need three to five centimetres on top, styled upward, to see the effect.
Should shorter men avoid long hair?
Not necessarily, but long hair that falls down and around the face tends to make the frame look more compact. Shorter sides with length on top is the safer choice.
