Keratin Treatment for Men: What It Does to Frizz and Curl
A keratin treatment is a salon service that coats the hair with a smoothing solution and seals it in with heat from a flat iron. For men, the main effect is less frizz, faster drying and hair that sits smoother and flatter. It loosens waves and softens curl rather than making curly hair poker straight, and it fades gradually, usually over a few months, as you wash. The trade-offs are cost, a couple of hours in a chair, care rules for the first days, and the need to ask exactly what is in the product, because some smoothing treatments release formaldehyde when heated. We do not offer keratin treatments at Highgate Cuts; this is general information to help you decide.
Below is what happens during one, who it suits, what to ask the salon, and how it changes the way your hair should be cut.
What a keratin treatment actually is
Keratin is the main protein in hair. The treatments sold under that name are smoothing systems: a solution containing keratin-derived ingredients and other smoothing agents is applied, then sealed with a hot iron. That reshapes the outer layer of the hair so it lies flatter and holds less frizz.
It is different from chemical straightening, often called relaxing or rebonding, which permanently breaks and resets the internal bonds of the hair. A keratin treatment is semi-permanent and fades out. It is also the opposite of a perm, which adds curl; our guide to the men’s perm covers that.
What it does to frizz, wave and curl
| Hair type | Typical result |
|---|---|
| Straight but frizzy or puffy | Smooth, shiny, flatter; often the most noticeable change |
| Wavy | Waves loosen; hair can often be air-dried straight |
| Curly | Curl softens and frizz drops; curls still there but looser |
| Tightly coiled | Less shrinkage and easier detangling; still textured |
Results vary a lot with the product used, your hair’s condition and the skill of the stylist. Ask to see examples on hair like yours.
Who it tends to suit
- Men with medium to long hair that frizzes in damp weather and takes ages to style.
- Men who blow-dry straight every day and want to stop.
- Men with wavy hair who want a smoother, more controlled shape.
It suits short, clippered cuts less well. On a skin fade or a short crop most of the treated hair is cut off within a few weeks, so you pay for a result you do not keep. If frizz on short hair is the problem, a better cut and the right product usually solve it. Our post on styles that survive a damp London day has options.
What happens at the salon
- Consultation about your hair, history of colour or chemical treatment, and what you want.
- A clarifying wash to remove product and oil.
- The solution is applied in sections and left to work.
- The hair is blow-dried.
- A flat iron seals the treatment in, section by section. This is the longest part.
- Depending on the system, you either leave it for a set time before washing or it is rinsed and finished in the salon.
Expect a couple of hours, longer for long or thick hair.
What to ask before you book
This matters more than anything else in this post. Some smoothing products contain, or release when heated, formaldehyde or related chemicals. Formaldehyde is restricted in cosmetics in the UK, and the Health and Safety Executive sets rules on exposure for salon workers. Ask the salon:
- What is the exact product, and does it contain or release formaldehyde?
- Is the room well ventilated during the ironing stage?
- Have they done it on hair like yours, and can they show you?
- Is it suitable for coloured or bleached hair?
- How soon can you wash, exercise or swim afterwards?
- Can they do a strand or patch test first?
If you have sensitive skin, asthma or any reaction to hair products in the past, check with your GP or pharmacist before booking, and tell the stylist.
Aftercare and how long it lasts
Most treatments last a few months. They fade faster with frequent washing, sulphate-heavy shampoos, chlorine and sea water. Typical aftercare includes:
- Following the salon’s rules on when you can first wash, tie or tuck your hair.
- Using a sulphate-free shampoo.
- Washing less often where you can.
- Keeping heat styling moderate.
Sweat matters too. If you train hard most days, ask the salon how that affects the treatment’s life.
Cutting hair that has had a keratin treatment
This is where the barber comes in. Smoothed hair falls differently: it is heavier, flatter and shows every line. Three things change:
- Timing. Many people get their cut a little before the treatment so the shape is set, then a light tidy afterwards. Ask the salon which they prefer.
- Weight and layering. Hair that used to bulk out with curl now lies flat, so a cut built to remove volume can look thin. It usually needs a softer approach.
- Grow-out. As the treatment fades and new hair grows, you get smooth ends with natural texture at the roots. A scissor cut that works with both looks better than fighting either.
At Highgate Cuts every visit starts with an assessment, so tell the barber about the treatment and when it was done. A scissor cut at our Highgate barbers can be shaped around how your hair now falls, and adjusted as it grows out. Our guide to haircuts for curly hair is useful once the curl comes back.
Questions we get asked
Does a keratin treatment make men’s hair straight?
It smooths and loosens. Straight-but-frizzy hair becomes sleek; curly hair becomes looser and less frizzy, but usually still has movement.
How long does a keratin treatment last?
Typically a few months, depending on the product, your hair and how often you wash it.
Is a keratin treatment worth it for short hair?
Usually not. Most of the treated hair is cut off quickly. A better cut and product are often a cheaper fix.
Can I still get a fade after a keratin treatment?
Yes. The sides are clippered short anyway; tell the barber about the treatment so the top is cut to suit.
