Stag Do Grooming: Getting the Groom and Group Ready to Go

October 15, 2026•6 min read

For a stag do, the groom should have a normal, conservative cut three to seven days before he leaves, not a dramatic new style, because the wedding cut follows in a few weeks and needs something to work with. The group can book cuts in the same week, ideally staggered across a few slots so one barber is not trying to do eight men in an hour. Email the barber two to four weeks ahead with numbers and dates. Pack a small grooming kit for the weekend, and agree in advance that nobody shaves anything into the groom’s head.

Stag dos are about the weekend, but the grooming decisions you make for them can affect the wedding photos. Here is how to plan it.

The groom: why this cut matters more than it seems

The stag do usually lands two to eight weeks before the wedding. That is exactly the window when the groom’s hair should be heading steadily towards the wedding cut, not being reset. A big change now, such as going much shorter, taking a fade much higher or growing out a beard and then shaving it for the stag, can leave too little time to get the wedding look right.

The safest approach for the groom:

  • Have the cut you plan to wear at the wedding, or a slightly longer version of it.
  • Keep the beard at roughly the length you want on the day, just tidied.
  • Do not experiment with colour, designs or new styles.
  • Book the wedding haircut at the same time as the stag cut, so both are in the diary.

Our groom haircut timeline sets out when to book each cut in the months before the wedding, and the stag cut fits neatly into it.

Timing for the stag weekend itself

Who Service When
Groom Haircut and beard tidy 3 to 7 days before leaving
Group, short fades Haircut 2 to 5 days before
Group, longer cuts Haircut 5 to 10 days before
Anyone clean-shaven Hot towel shave, optional Day before travelling

A hot towel shave before a weekend away is a good treat for the groom. It takes 20 to 30 minutes and gives a close shave that lasts longer than a rushed one at home. If the group wants to book shaves too, mention it when you email so the barbers can plan the time.

Booking a group at the barber

Group bookings are entirely possible at most barbers with notice, but they need a little more organising than a single cut. One person should coordinate and send a single email with:

  1. The number of people and the services each wants: cut, beard tidy, shave.
  2. Two or three possible days, and whether evenings or weekends are needed.
  3. Whether the group wants to come together or is happy with individual slots across the week.
  4. Any particular requests, such as matching looks or keeping the groom’s appointment separate.

Be realistic about time. Each person still has an assessment at the start of the visit, where the barber looks at their hair and what they want, before any cutting begins. Eight haircuts cannot happen in an hour with one barber. Splitting the group across several slots or days usually works better than one big session, and means nobody is rushed. Email us at Highgate Cuts with your numbers and we will tell you what we can arrange.

Should the group all get the same cut?

For a stag do, no. Matching haircuts look good in theory and odd in practice, because the same cut looks very different on different hair types and face shapes. What usually works better is everyone simply getting a fresh, tidy version of their own cut, so the group photos look sharp. If you want a shared theme, a tidy beard line or a fresh shave is more flattering than identical fades.

The wedding itself is different. If the groomsmen want a coordinated look on the day, our guide to groomsmen haircuts explains how to match the level of neatness without forcing everyone into the same style.

The grooming kit for the weekend

A stag do usually means late nights, shared bathrooms and little time. Pack light and practical:

  • A small tin of matte paste or clay that works on dry or slightly damp hair.
  • A pocket comb.
  • Your usual razor and a travel-size shaving cream, if you shave.
  • A small beard oil if you have a beard.
  • Moisturiser and SPF if the trip is somewhere sunny.
  • Lip balm and plenty of water. Dehydration shows in skin within a day.

If you are flying with hand luggage only, keep liquids within the airport limits. Our article on packing a grooming kit for hand luggage lists what travels well.

Protecting the groom from the group

Every barber has heard the stories: half a moustache, a shaved eyebrow, a line clipped through the side of the head. They are less funny with three weeks until the wedding. Hair takes time to grow back, and an eyebrow can take weeks to fill in properly.

Agree a rule in advance with the best man: no clippers, razors or hair dye near the groom. Fancy dress and silly hats are fine. If something does happen, see a barber as soon as possible after the weekend. A good barber can often blend or disguise damage, but it is much easier with weeks to work with than days.

After the stag: recovery before the wedding

A heavy weekend can leave skin dull and dry. In the following week, drink plenty of water, get proper sleep and use a plain moisturiser. If the groom normally shaves, a gentle shave or two at home, with a fresh blade, helps the skin settle before the wedding shave. Then stick to the timeline: wedding cut in the final week, shave on the morning or the day before.

Questions we get asked

How far ahead should we book a group?

Two to four weeks is a good guide, longer in the busy wedding season and in December.

Can we all come in together?

Email us with numbers and we will tell you what is possible. Often a few smaller slots work better than one large group. The Highgate barber page lists the services available.

How much will a group booking cost?

Prices are not published yet. See the barber menu or email us with what each person wants.

Should the groom shave his beard for the stag?

Only if he plans to be clean-shaven at the wedding. Shaving it now and trying to regrow it in time rarely works. Talk it through at the assessment at Highgate Cuts.
