Back-to-School Haircuts in North London: When to Book the Chair

October 15, 2026•6 min read

Book a back-to-school haircut for roughly five to ten days before term starts, and make the appointment two to three weeks before that. A cut done a week ahead has time to settle, any redness on the neckline has gone, and if anything needs adjusting there is still time. Leave it to the last weekend of the holidays and you are competing with every other family in North London for the same slots. Before booking, check your school’s rules on length, fades and shaved lines, because some schools are strict and a cut that breaks the rules cannot be grown back in a weekend.

Why timing matters more than the style

Most parents think about what cut to ask for. The more common problem is when. Three things go wrong with a last-minute cut:

  • It looks freshly cut. Very short sides and a sharp neckline often look harsh for the first few days, particularly on fair hair or pale skin.
  • Irritation. Some children get a red, itchy neck after clippers. It usually calms within a day or two, but not if the cut was the night before.
  • No slots. The final week of August and the first days of September are the busiest of the year for barbers, along with the weeks before Christmas.

Term dates differ between schools and boroughs, so check yours. Independent schools in the area often go back on different days from state schools. The government has a term date finder on gov.uk that links to your local council.

A simple timeline

  1. Mid-July or as soon as term dates are confirmed: note the first day of term and count back seven to ten days. That is your target cut date.
  2. Two to three weeks before the target date: email to book. Early mornings and weekday daytimes during the holidays are usually easier than Saturdays.
  3. A few days before the cut: reread the school’s uniform and appearance policy.
  4. Cut day: wash hair the night before so the barber can see how it naturally falls.
  5. First day of term: the cut has settled and looks like it belongs to them.

Shorter cuts need to be closer to the date. A skin fade done ten days out will already be softening by the first day, which some families prefer. If you want it crisp, aim for five to seven days.

Check the school rules first

School appearance rules are set by each school, and they vary a lot. Common points include:

  • No shaved lines, patterns or parts cut in with a razor.
  • No very short grades on the sides, sometimes stated as a minimum clipper number.
  • Hair off the collar or out of the eyes.
  • No dramatic differences in length between top and sides.
  • No unnatural colours.

Bring a screenshot of the relevant line from the policy. It saves guesswork in the chair. Our guide to school haircut rules in the UK explains how these policies are usually worded and what is generally accepted.

Styles that last a whole half-term

If you want one cut to see your child comfortably to the October break, choose something that grows out gracefully:

  • Short back and sides with scissor-cut top. Neat on day one and still tidy after five or six weeks.
  • Classic taper rather than a skin fade. Leaves a little length at the bottom, so regrowth is less obvious.
  • Textured crop. Short fringe, easy to towel dry after PE.
  • Longer cuts with shape. For children growing their hair, a tidy-up of the ends and neckline keeps it within the rules.

Teenagers and the negotiation

Teenagers often want a cut that pushes against the rules. A barber who listens can usually find a version of what they want that the school will accept: a little more length on the sides, a softer fade, texture on top instead of a hard line. Let your teenager do most of the talking in the chair. They are more likely to look after a cut they chose.

Before the appointment: a short checklist

  • First day of term, written down.
  • The school’s rule on hair, as a screenshot.
  • A photo or two of a cut they like, ideally on hair similar to theirs.
  • Clean, dry hair, no product.
  • Any skin sensitivity mentioned when you book.
  • A plan for the next trim, often around the half-term break.

What happens in the chair

At Highgate Cuts, every visit starts with an assessment: the barber looks at the hair and what is needed, then makes recommendations. For a school cut, that conversation covers the rules, how fast the hair grows and how much time the family is willing to spend on it in the morning. If your child is nervous, say so when you book. A calm explanation of each step and a few minutes to sit in the chair first can make a real difference.

After term starts

Most short school cuts need a trim every four to six weeks to stay within the rules. Book the next one in the same visit if you can, ideally into the half-term holiday, so it does not collide with school or sports fixtures. Our piece on how often boys need a haircut gives more detail by style. Looking ahead, school photo day often lands early in the autumn term too, and the same rule applies: about a week ahead.

Questions we get asked

How far in advance should I book a back-to-school haircut?

Make the booking two to three weeks before your target cut date, and aim for the cut itself five to ten days before term starts.

Is a skin fade allowed at school?

It depends on the school. Some ban very short grades or visible skin. Check the uniform policy, and if unsure ask for a taper, which tends to be accepted more widely.

Can you cut a design into the side?

Many schools do not allow shaved lines or patterns. Save designs for the summer holidays unless the policy clearly permits them.

How much is a child’s cut?

Barber prices are not published yet. See the barber menu or email us and we will confirm.
