When to Get a Haircut Before a Holiday (and What to Ask For)

October 15, 2026•6 min read

For most men, the best time for a haircut before a holiday is five to seven days before you fly. That gives a fresh fade time to soften, a scissor cut a few days to settle, and you a chance to get anything adjusted before you go. The day before is risky: there is no time to fix a problem, and very short sides can leave untanned pale skin that shows a stripe in the sun. For a long trip, ask for a cut that will grow out gracefully rather than one that looks perfect on day one and shapeless by day ten. The detail depends on the cut and the length of the trip.

Why not the day before

It is tempting to leave it as late as possible so the cut lasts longer. Three things argue against it.

  • No room to fix anything. If the neckline is higher than you wanted or the top is shorter than expected, you have no second appointment before you leave.
  • The “fresh cut” look. Very freshly cut hair, especially a skin fade, can look stark for a couple of days. By day three to five it has softened.
  • Pale skin under short hair. If your sides go from a number 3 to skin the day before you fly, that newly exposed scalp has had no sun at all. It burns easily and can leave a visible line. More on that below.

Then there is the practical side. The week before a holiday is busy, and barbers get booked up before school holidays and bank holidays. Book a slot well ahead rather than hoping for a gap.

Timing by type of cut

Cut Book before you fly Notes
Skin or low fade 3 to 5 days Softens quickly; still sharp for a week-long trip
Taper or classic short back and sides 5 to 7 days Grows out evenly, very forgiving
Scissor cut, medium length 7 to 10 days Gives the shape time to settle and you time to learn to style it
New or dramatically different style 2 to 3 weeks Allows a follow-up visit if it needs adjusting
Beard shape 2 to 4 days Lines grow in fast; easy to maintain with a trimmer while away

A wedding or an event abroad is a slightly different calculation. If there will be photographs, aim for the cut to be at its best on the day of the event, not the day you leave.

What to ask your barber for

Tell the barber you are going away, for how long and where. During the assessment at the start of every Highgate Cuts visit, that changes what we recommend. Useful things to ask for:

  • One guard longer on the sides than usual, particularly for trips of two weeks or more. It stays tidy longer and avoids exposing pale scalp.
  • A tapered rather than blocked neckline. A taper grows out naturally; a square line looks untidy within a week. Our guide to tapered vs blocked necklines shows the difference.
  • Weight taken out of thick hair for heat and humidity, so it sits flatter and dries faster after swimming.
  • A style that works without product, or with a single product you can carry. Ask what the minimum styling is.
  • Your guard number written down, in case you need a tidy-up from a barber abroad.

If you want something lighter for warm weather, our guide to summer haircuts for men covers the shapes that suit heat, sea and long days. Have a look at the cuts our Highgate barbers offer before you book.

Short hair and the sun

This is the point most men overlook. Hair protects the scalp from sunlight. A shorter cut, a fresh fade, or a parting that sits in the same place all day, leaves skin exposed that is not used to it. Sunburn on the scalp is painful and the skin there can peel. The NHS recommends sunscreen of at least SPF 30 with at least a 4-star UVA rating, a hat, and staying in the shade during the hottest part of the day; its sun safety guidance has the detail.

Practical steps: a hat for long periods outdoors, a sunscreen spray or stick that does not leave hair greasy, and extra care on the first two days. Our post on scalp sun protection for short hair goes into product types.

Sea, pools and your hair

Chlorine and salt water both dry hair out, and lighter or colour-treated hair can change tone after a fortnight in a pool. A few habits help:

  1. Rinse your hair with fresh water before swimming. Wet hair absorbs less pool water.
  2. Rinse again straight after.
  3. Use conditioner more than usual while away.
  4. Do not over-wash: once a day is plenty, even in heat.

We cover this properly in chlorine and salt water hair care for men.

A short packing checklist

  • A small beard trimmer with a guard, if you keep a shaped beard.
  • One styling product in a travel size, or none if your cut works without.
  • Conditioner, as hotel toiletries tend to be harsh.
  • Scalp-friendly sunscreen and a hat.
  • A note of your guard number and neckline style.

When you get back

After two or three weeks away, a cut that has grown out usually needs a reset rather than a trim. Sun and salt can also leave hair drier than normal, which is worth mentioning at your next appointment. Many men find it useful to book the return visit at the same time as the pre-holiday one, so it is in the diary before the post-holiday inbox takes over. Questions we get asked

Should I get a haircut before or after holiday?

Before, for most trips of a week or two. For a long trip of a month or more, a medium cut before and a proper reset after usually works best.

Will a fresh skin fade burn in the sun?

The newly exposed skin can burn easily. Use sunscreen on the scalp and sides, wear a hat, or ask for a longer guard on the sides.

Can I get my beard done at the same appointment?

Yes. A cut and beard shape together is common before a trip. Mention it when you email so we allow enough time.
