How Long Does a Men's Haircut Take? Timings by Service
A standard men’s haircut usually takes 20 to 45 minutes in the chair. A simple clipper cut sits at the shorter end; a skin fade or a full scissor cut, which involve more blending and detail work, sit at the longer end. Add a beard trim and you are typically looking at another 15 to 20 minutes. A hot towel shave at Highgate Cuts takes 20 to 30 minutes on its own. Your first visit to any barber often runs a little longer, because the barber needs to understand your hair before cutting it. Below is what drives each of those numbers, and how to plan around them.
Typical timings at a glance
These are general ranges across good barbers, not a promise of any particular appointment. Every head of hair is different, and a barber who is not rushing will take the time a cut needs. When you book with us, ask and we will tell you how long to allow.
Service | Typical time in the chair | What makes it longer |
|---|---|---|
Clipper cut, one or two guards | 15 to 25 minutes | Tidying the neckline and around the ears properly |
Short back and sides with scissors on top | 25 to 40 minutes | Thick hair, cowlicks, a precise parting |
Skin fade | 30 to 45 minutes | A very high or very tight fade, foil shaving to the skin, fine or light hair that shows every line |
Full scissor cut | 35 to 50 minutes | Length, texture work, curly or wavy hair |
Beard trim and shape | 15 to 25 minutes | A long beard, a big change of shape, a cut-throat edge |
Haircut and beard together | 45 to 60 minutes | Blending a fade into the beard |
Hot towel shave (at Highgate Cuts) | 20 to 30 minutes | Confirmed by the shop |
Why a skin fade takes longer than it looks
A fade is not one clipper setting but several, blended into each other until there is no visible line. The barber works up the head in stages, switching guards and lever positions, going back over transitions with the edge of the clipper, often with a trimmer or a foil shaver at the bottom. The higher the fade and the closer to the skin it goes, the more blending it needs. Lighter or finer hair shows every mark, so it takes more passes to make it look seamless. If a skin fade is done in ten minutes, it usually looks like it. We explain the variations in what a fade haircut actually is.
Why scissor cuts take time
A clipper removes hair to an exact length in one pass. Scissors work section by section, with the barber holding hair between the fingers or over a comb and cutting it by eye. That control is the whole point: it lets the barber leave weight in one place and take it out in another, which suits longer styles, wavy hair and anyone who wants the shape to grow out softly. It also means a full scissor cut is the slowest of the standard services. If you have never had one, our guide to scissor-over-comb technique explains what is going on.
The parts of a visit nobody counts
Time in the chair is not just cutting. A typical visit looks roughly like this:
The assessment. At Highgate Cuts every visit starts with the barber looking at your hair and asking what you need, then making recommendations. A few minutes here saves a cut you do not like.
Preparing the hair. Some cuts are done on damp hair, some on dry. Wetting or washing adds a few minutes.
The cut itself. The bulk of the time.
Detail work. Neckline, around the ears, sideburns, any line-up. This is where a good barber spends time a quick one skips.
Finishing and styling. A blow-dry, a little product, and a look in the mirror from behind.
Booking the next one. A minute, and it saves you going a fortnight too long next time.
What makes a haircut run long
A big change. Going from long to short, or growing out a fade into something else, takes more thought and more cutting.
Waiting too long between cuts. If the shape has completely gone, the barber has to rebuild it rather than refresh it. Our guide to how often to get a haircut helps here.
Thick, curly or textured hair. More hair to manage, and more care needed to cut it to sit properly.
Not knowing what you want. Perfectly fine, but it adds a conversation. A reference photo shortens it.
Combining services. Cut, beard and shave together is a longer appointment, though usually quicker than booking them separately.
How to plan your time around a cut
If you are fitting a haircut into a working day, allow the chair time plus ten minutes either side. Arriving five minutes early is genuinely useful: it gives you time to take off a coat, settle and say what you want without the clock running. Leaving a small buffer afterwards means you are not checking your watch while the barber finishes the neckline, which is the part that most affects how the cut looks a week later.
For anything time-sensitive, such as a wedding, an interview or a photograph, book a few days before rather than on the morning. A fresh fade looks sharpest after a couple of days, and a scissor cut settles in about the same time.
The Highgate House is on Archway Road, about five minutes’ walk from Highgate tube station on the Northern line, so a cut fits reasonably easily around a commute. Booking is by email for now, with online booking coming soon. Tell us the service and when suits you, and we will give you times and how long to allow. You can see what we offer on our Highgate barber page.
Is a quick haircut a bad haircut?
Not necessarily. An experienced barber cutting a style they do every day, on a client whose hair they know, can be both quick and excellent. A regular clipper cut on a returning client should not take long. What you want to avoid is a cut that is quick because steps are skipped: an unblended fade, a neckline left fuzzy, ears not checked. The best test is the second week, not the first hour. A well-cut style grows out evenly; a rushed one starts to look wrong after a few days.
Questions we get asked
How long does a first appointment take?
Usually a little longer than later visits, because the assessment at the start takes more time when the barber does not yet know your hair. Allow an extra ten minutes or so.
How long does a hot towel shave take?
At Highgate Cuts, 20 to 30 minutes. That includes the hot towels and preparation, which are what make the shave close and comfortable.
Is a haircut and beard trim quicker if booked together?
Generally yes. The barber can blend the sides into the beard in one go, and you only sit down once. Mention both when you email so we allow the right time.
Can I book a quick cut before work?
Opening hours will be announced at opening. Email us with the time you have in mind and the service, and we will tell you what is possible. Prices are on the barber menu, or ask us by email.
Time in the chair is one of the main things you pay for. Our guide to men's haircut prices in London breaks it down by service.
