School Photo Day Haircut: When to Book So It Looks Settled

October 15, 2026•6 min read

Book a school photo haircut about five to seven days before photo day for most children, or three to four days for a short fade or clipper cut. That window lets the fresh line at the neck and around the ears soften, gets rid of the slightly startled look a just-cut child often has, and leaves time for one or two normal mornings of styling. A cut the day before is the most common mistake: it looks sharp in the chair and slightly unnatural in a photo that will sit on a grandparent’s mantelpiece for years. Ask for a tidy version of the usual cut, not a new style.

Why a day-before cut photographs badly

Children’s hair often shows a fresh cut more clearly than adults’. Their skin is paler where hair has just been removed, their hair is finer and sits differently until it has been washed and slept on a few times, and they are less used to the feel of it, which can mean a lot of touching on the day.

Studio flash and close framing exaggerate all of this. A hard line at the temples or behind the ears that you would never notice at the school gate can stand out in a portrait.

How far ahead to book, by cut

Child’s cut Book this far ahead Notes
Short clipper cut or fade 3 to 4 days Grows out visibly within two weeks, so not too early
Short back and sides, scissor top 5 to 7 days The ideal window for most boys
Longer, scissor-cut hair 7 to 10 days Needs a few washes to fall naturally
Curly hair 7 to 10 days Curls take time to settle into their new shape
Fringe only tidy 2 to 4 days Keep it clear of the eyebrows, not above them

Schools usually announce photo day a few weeks ahead. Book as soon as the date comes home, because that week tends to be busy, and the early weeks of the autumn term are busy anyway. Our post on back-to-school haircuts in North London covers the September rush.

What to ask the barber

At Highgate Cuts every visit starts with an assessment, where the barber looks at your child’s hair and what is needed before recommending anything. For photo day, the useful brief is short:

  1. “It’s for school photos on [date].” The barber can then pitch the cut to look its best on that day, not the day it is cut.
  2. “Same style as usual, just tidier.” A new style a week before photos is a gamble.
  3. Fringe length. Cutting a fringe too short is the error parents most often regret. Just clear of the eyebrows usually photographs best.
  4. Soft rather than hard lines. A gentle taper at the neck and a natural outline around the ears look better on camera than a crisp edge.
  5. Your school’s rules. Some schools have rules about very short clipper grades, shaved lines or designs. Our post on school haircut rules in the UK covers what schools commonly allow; the gov.uk school uniform page confirms that schools set their own policies.

If your child is nervous in the chair, mention it when you book. A calm appointment produces a better cut.

The morning of photo day

Keep the morning routine simple. The checklist we suggest:

  • Wash hair the evening before, not the morning, unless it goes greasy overnight. Freshly washed fine hair can be flyaway.
  • Comb it the way it normally sits. Avoid a dramatic new parting just for the day.
  • Skip heavy gels. A tiny amount of water or a light cream tames stray hairs without the wet look, which can shine under flash.
  • Pack a small comb in the school bag, with a word to the child that it is for the photo.
  • Check the back and crown in a hand mirror. Cowlicks and slept-on patches are easier to fix with a little water than with product.

Curly, thick and long hair

Curly hair changes most after a cut, because removing length changes how the curls form. Give it longer to settle, ideally a week to ten days, and avoid brushing it out dry on the morning, which turns curls into frizz. A spray of water and scrunching usually helps.

For longer hair, the main thing is a clean shape and ends, plus an agreement with your child about whether it will be tucked behind the ears, worn loose or tied back. Practise once before the day.

Siblings and family photos

Some schools photograph brothers and sisters together, and some families book a portrait session around the same time. If two or three children need cuts, book them on the same day so the hair grows at the same pace and looks consistent in the shared shot. It also saves you a second trip. Mention the number of children when you email, so enough time can be set aside, and say which child is most likely to fidget so they can go first while their patience is at its best.

What if you missed the window?

If photo day is tomorrow and the hair is overdue, a quick neck and fringe tidy is better than a full cut. It removes the scruffiest edges without changing the shape. If there is a retake day, a full cut a week before that is the better plan.

Keeping the rhythm going after photos

Many families find school photo day a useful reminder to settle into a regular rhythm for the year. Our guide to how often boys should get a haircut breaks it down by style. You can see the full range of services on the Highgate Cuts barber page.

Questions we get asked

Is a week before too early for school photos?

Not for most cuts. A short fade can be closer, around three or four days, because it grows out faster.

Should I cut my child’s fringe myself the night before?

It is tempting, but home fringe trims the night before are the most common photo regret. If it needs doing, have it done a few days ahead.

Can my child have a design or line cut in for photos?

Check your school’s rules first. Many schools do not allow shaved designs.

What if my child’s hair sticks up at the crown?

Mention it to the barber; the length at the crown can be left so it lies flatter. On the day, a little water usually calms it.
