Valentine's Grooming for Men: What to Book and When

October 15, 2026•6 min read

For most men, the best time for a Valentine’s haircut is three to five days before the date, not the morning of. That gives a fade or a fresh neckline time to soften so it looks like your hair rather than a haircut. A beard trim works best one to three days before, and a hot towel shave the day before or the day itself, depending on how your skin reacts. In 2027, 14 February falls on a Sunday, which means plenty of dinners will be on the Saturday, and Friday and Saturday chairs fill early. Email in the first week of February if you want a choice of times.

Why timing matters more than the cut

A haircut looks its best a few days after it is done, not straight out of the chair. Freshly clippered sides show a slightly paler band of skin, the neckline is very sharp, and the top has not yet settled into its natural fall. After three or four days the short sections have grown just enough to look even, and you have washed and styled it a couple of times, so you know how it behaves. Book it too far ahead and the reverse happens: a skin fade starts to lose its crispness after about a week and a half.

The same logic applies to beards. A freshly cut cheek line can look slightly drawn on for a day. A neckline cleaned up with a razor may show a little redness if your skin is sensitive. A small buffer fixes both.

What to book, and when

Service Ideal timing before the date Why
Skin fade or very short sides 2 to 4 days Softens the line without losing sharpness
Scissor cut or longer style 5 to 7 days Gives the shape time to settle and you time to learn how to style it
New style, first time 10 to 14 days Room for a small adjustment if you are not sure
Beard trim and shape 1 to 3 days Lines are fresh but not raw
Hot towel shave Same day or day before Smoothest result; leave a day if your skin tends to redden

If you are combining a haircut and a beard trim, one visit two or three days before covers both. A combined appointment takes longer than either on its own, so mention both when you email. We explain what is involved in our guide to a haircut and beard trim together.

Do not try a new style this week

This is the advice men most often ignore. Valentine’s is a poor moment to experiment. If you have been thinking about going from a scissor cut to a skin fade, or growing the top out for a textured crop, do it in January, live with it for a couple of weeks, and use the February appointment to refine it. A dramatic change the day before a date leaves you no time to adjust and no time to get used to your own reflection.

The same goes for beards. Taking a full beard down to stubble is irreversible for weeks. If you are wavering, our post on questions to ask before shaving your beard off is worth five minutes first.

The hot towel shave: a sensible treat, with one caveat

A traditional hot towel shave at Highgate Cuts takes 20 to 30 minutes. The warm towels soften the hair and open up the skin, the lather is worked in, and the shave is done with a straight razor in careful passes. It gives the closest, smoothest finish a man can get, and the time in the chair is genuinely restful, which is no bad thing before an evening out.

The caveat: if you have sensitive skin, are prone to razor bumps, or have never had a straight razor shave before, book it the day before rather than the afternoon of the date. Any redness usually settles overnight. If you have had a good shave before and your skin tolerates it, same-day is fine and the finish is at its best. Our full guide to the hot towel shave explains what happens step by step.

What to do yourself in the week before

Five to seven days out

  • Book your haircut in Highgate if you have not already.
  • Stop any home trimming of the neckline or sideburns, so the barber has length to work with.
  • If your skin is dry from the cold, start moisturising morning and night now. A few days of consistency does more than a heavy dose on the night.

Two to three days out

  • Haircut and beard trim.
  • Ask the barber which product and how much they used, and practise styling it once at home.
  • Tidy eyebrows, nose and ear hair with a trimmer, not tweezers. Plucking can leave red spots for a day or two.

The day itself

  • Shave (if you shave yourself) after a warm shower, with a sharp blade, going with the grain.
  • Style your hair with less product than you think. Heavy product looks dated close up.
  • Go light on fragrance. One or two sprays, not five.
  • Clean nails. Nobody mentions them, everyone notices them.

Booking around a busy week

The week before Valentine’s is consistently one of the busier weeks of the year in barbershops, and late-week evening slots go first because that is when people who work in town can get there. A few practical points:

  1. Book by email early. Our booking is by email for now; say which service you want and the days that suit you, and we will reply with times.
  2. Consider an early-week appointment. A Tuesday or Wednesday cut is perfectly timed for a weekend dinner and much easier to get.
  3. Be clear about the service. “Haircut, beard trim and a hot towel shave” is a longer booking than a haircut. Saying so up front avoids a rushed visit.

The barbers are on the ground floor of The Highgate House on Archway Road, about five minutes’ walk from Highgate tube, which makes a weekday evening appointment easy if you are heading home on the Northern line. For services and how the visit works, see the Highgate Cuts barber page. For prices, see the barber menu or email us.

A note on gifts

If you are the one buying, grooming gifts are only welcome when they are something the person already uses or genuinely wants. A barber appointment arranged on someone’s behalf can work well, but ask them first: people are particular about who cuts their hair. Our guide to grooming gifts for men covers what tends to be used and what ends up in a drawer.

Questions we get asked

Is it too late to book a Valentine’s haircut the day before?

Not always, but choice will be limited that week. Email as early as you can and be flexible on time.

Should I get my haircut on the day of the date?

Only if it is a tidy-up of a style you already have. For anything with very short sides, two to four days before looks more natural.

Can I book a haircut and a shave in one visit?

Yes. Mention both when you email so the right amount of time is set aside.

How long does a hot towel shave take?

At Highgate Cuts, 20 to 30 minutes.
