Beard Trends for 2027: Shorter Shapes and Natural Lines

October 15, 2026•6 min read

The beard trends we expect to define 2027 are shorter, tidier and more natural-looking than the big beards of a few years ago. Short boxed beards and heavy stubble with a clear shape lead the way. Cheek lines are following natural growth instead of being shaved into hard, low lines. Necklines are lower and softer. Grey is being kept rather than covered, and moustaches are being worn with a beard rather than as a statement on their own. The common idea is a beard that looks deliberate but not overworked, and that is easy to keep up between barber visits. These are observations from the chair and from following the trade rather than survey data, but the direction is consistent.

As with any trend, it matters most whether a style suits your growth and face. Every visit to Highgate Cuts starts with an assessment: the barber looks at your beard and how you wear it, then recommends what will work.

Why beards are getting shorter

Long, full beards take time: daily washing, oiling, brushing and regular shaping. Many men who grew them have found that a shorter beard gives most of the effect for a fraction of the upkeep. A shorter beard also shows a jawline better, sits more comfortably under a scarf or collar, and looks tidier in the office. That does not mean big beards are finished. It means the average beard is moving shorter.

Six beard styles we expect to see more of

1. The short boxed beard

An even length of roughly a centimetre or two, with defined cheeks and neckline and a squared-off but not severe shape at the chin. It works in almost any profession. Our guide to the short boxed beard covers how to ask for and maintain it.

2. Heavy stubble with a shape

Not just a few days’ growth, but stubble kept at a set length with the neck cleaned up and the cheeks tidied. It reads as intentional. More on lengths and edges in our post on designer stubble.

3. Natural cheek lines

Rather than a hard razor line dropped low on the cheek, more men are keeping their natural line and simply removing stray hairs above it. It looks fuller and grows out without an obvious border.

4. Softer, lower necklines

The neckline is sitting lower, usually a finger or two above the Adam’s apple, with a gently faded edge rather than a stark line. It keeps the shadow under the jaw and avoids the chinstrap effect.

5. Grey worn openly

Salt and pepper beards are being kept as they are, with the shape doing the work. A neat cut makes grey look distinguished rather than unkempt. Our post on grey beard care covers softening wiry greys.

6. The beard fade

Where the sideburns blend down from a fade into the beard, with no hard step. With low tapers increasingly popular on the head, the beard needs to connect smoothly.

The moustache is back inside the beard

A few years ago the stand-alone moustache had a moment. The quieter version we expect in 2027 is a moustache that is given a little more attention within a short beard: kept slightly fuller, trimmed just clear of the top lip, and allowed to be the strongest feature of the shape. It suits men whose cheek growth is lighter than their upper lip, because it moves the eye to where the beard is densest. Ask the barber to trim the moustache line with scissors rather than clippers if you want it to look soft rather than blunt.

Skin under a shorter beard

Shorter beards expose more of the skin underneath, and short hairs can feel prickly on the neck as they regrow. Itching, flaking or small spots are common in the first weeks after cutting a beard down. A gentle wash, a light moisturiser or beard oil worked into the skin, and not shaving the neck too closely usually settle it. If you get painful bumps or a persistent rash, show a pharmacist or GP.

What we expect to fall back

  • Very sharp, low cheek lines cut with a razor far below natural growth
  • Heavily sculpted, pointed shapes that need weekly maintenance
  • Very long beards worn untrimmed as an everyday look
  • High necklines shaved along the jaw

Picking a trend that suits your beard

Your beard Good options Watch out for
Dense, even growth Short boxed beard, beard fade Going too short and losing shape
Patchy on the cheeks Heavy stubble, natural cheek line Hard lines that frame the gaps
Grey or greying Short boxed beard, neat stubble Letting it grow shapeless
Curly or coarse Slightly longer short beard, softer edges Very close razor necklines if you get bumps
Round face More length at the chin, tighter at the sides Width at the cheeks

How to ask your barber for a 2027 beard

  1. Say how you want it to look in two weeks, not just today. That shapes length choices.
  2. Mention your trimmer. If you maintain at home, the barber can tell you the guard length to keep it.
  3. Talk about the lines. Natural or defined cheeks? How low should the neckline sit?
  4. Combine it with your haircut if you have a fade or taper, so the two connect.
  5. Ask about a razor finish on the cheeks and neck for a cleaner edge.

Maintaining a shorter beard between visits

  • Trim the length every few days to a week with the same guard
  • Clean up the neck below the agreed line; never raise the line
  • Wash the beard with a gentle cleanser a few times a week
  • Use a little oil or balm, even on short beards, to soften and help the skin underneath
  • Book a shape every three to five weeks so the outline does not drift

Questions we get asked

Are long beards out of fashion?

No. They are less common than a few years ago, but a well-kept long beard still looks excellent. Shape and condition matter more than length.

Is stubble professional?

Stubble kept at a consistent length, with a clean neck and cheeks, is acceptable in most workplaces. Uneven growth is what looks scruffy.

Can you dye my beard to cover grey?

We do not offer colour. Our focus is the cut and shape, which makes grey look deliberate.

How much is a beard trim?
