Does Beard Oil Help a Beard Grow? What It Can and Cannot Do
No, beard oil does not make a beard grow faster, thicker or fill in patches. How much facial hair you grow, how fast and where, is set mainly by genetics, age and hormones, and nothing you rub on the surface changes the follicle in any meaningful way. What beard oil does do is useful, especially while you are growing: it softens coarse hair, reduces the itch and flaking of the first few weeks, cuts down on breakage at the ends, and makes the beard look healthier and fuller than it would dry. So it can help you keep a beard long enough to see what it can become, which is the real reason many men give up too early.
That distinction matters, because “growth oils” are marketed hard and the claims are rarely backed by anything solid.
What decides how your beard grows
- Genetics. The biggest factor by far. Density, pattern, where the patches sit and how coarse the hair is are largely inherited. Looking at your father, brothers and uncles is a reasonable guide.
- Age. Many men find their beard fills in through their twenties and into their early thirties. A patchy beard at 22 is not necessarily the beard you will have at 32.
- Hormones. Testosterone and its by-product DHT drive facial hair growth, but sensitivity of the follicles matters as much as levels. Men with normal hormone levels can still have light beards.
- General health. Very poor diet, significant illness or some medical conditions can affect hair. If hair is falling out in patches, that is a different matter from a beard that never grew thickly; see the section on when to see a GP.
None of these are things an oil can alter from the outside.
What beard oil genuinely does
It stops the itch phase from ending the experiment
Weeks two to six are when most men shave off a new beard. The short, sharp hairs curl back against the skin and the skin underneath dries out. Oil softens the hair tips and moisturises the skin, which takes the edge off. A few drops a day through this phase makes a noticeable difference.
It reduces breakage
Coarse beard hair snaps and splits easily, particularly in cold weather and with frequent washing. A beard that breaks at the ends never seems to get longer. Keeping the hair conditioned means more of what you grow stays on your face.
It makes the beard look fuller
Conditioned hair lies more neatly and reflects light more evenly, so the same number of hairs looks denser. That is cosmetic, but it is real, and it is often what men mean when they say oil “helped their beard grow”.
It deals with flaking
Dry skin under a beard flakes. Oil, used on a clean beard, keeps it comfortable. Persistent greasy flakes are a different issue, often seborrhoeic dermatitis, which oil can make worse.
What about “growth” ingredients
Many products sold for growth contain essential oils with growth claims attached, or ingredients like biotin. The evidence that rubbing these on the face increases beard growth in healthy men is thin to non-existent. Biotin deficiency is rare, and taking extra when you are not deficient has no proven benefit for hair.
Some beard growth products contain minoxidil, a licensed medicine for scalp hair loss. It is not a cosmetic, it can cause side effects, and using it on the face is outside its licensed use. If you are considering anything like that, talk to a pharmacist or your GP first rather than buying it online. We do not give medication advice, and neither should a beard shop.
What does help a beard look its best while growing
- Give it time. At least eight to twelve weeks before judging it. Many beards look worst at around four weeks.
- Do not trim the length too early, but do keep the edges. A tidy neckline and cheek line make an uneven beard look intentional. Our guide on getting through the first three months explains when to trim and what to leave.
- Brush it into place. Brushing hair from fuller areas across thinner areas covers patches more effectively than any product. See our advice on styles that work with a patchy beard.
- Wash and condition properly. Two or three washes a week, oil afterwards.
- Look after the basics. Sleep, a reasonable diet with enough protein, not smoking. These support general health, which supports hair, but they will not override genetics.
Using beard oil well
| Beard length | Amount | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Stubble to 1cm | 1 to 2 drops | Rub into the skin, not just the hair |
| 1 to 5cm | 3 to 4 drops | Apply after washing, while slightly damp |
| Over 5cm | 5 to 8 drops | Work from the ends upwards, then brush |
Choose a simple oil based on light carrier oils such as jojoba or argan. Fragrance is a preference, but strongly scented oils are more likely to irritate sensitive skin. Patch test anything new on a small area first.
When to see a GP
Round, smooth bald patches appearing in an established beard, sudden hair loss, or patches with redness, scaling or soreness are worth getting checked. Patchy hair loss in the beard can be a sign of alopecia areata or a skin condition rather than simple genetics. The NHS page on hair loss explains the common types and when to seek help.
How a barber helps
The best thing for a growing beard is often a good shape. A barber can tidy the lines, balance uneven growth and tell you honestly how your beard is filling in. At Highgate Cuts on Archway Road, every visit begins with an assessment of your hair and what you need, followed by recommendations, so you will get a straight view on whether to keep growing, shape it now or try a shorter style. The barber page lists the services, and the building is introduced on The Highgate House homepage.
Questions we get asked
Is beard oil a waste of money?
Not if you buy it for comfort and appearance. It is if you buy it to grow hair.
Can beard oil fill in a patchy beard?
No. It can make the hair you have look fuller and lie better over thin areas.
Should I use oil or balm?
Oil for conditioning and short beards; balm for hold on medium and longer beards. Our beard oil vs balm guide compares them.
Does shaving make a beard grow back thicker?
No. Shaved hair can feel coarser as it regrows because the tip is blunt, but density and growth rate do not change.
