Barber Near Muswell Hill: A Short Trip Down to Archway Road

October 15, 2026•6 min read

If you live in Muswell Hill and are looking for a barber, Highgate Cuts on Archway Road is one short bus ride or a pleasant walk through the woods away. Muswell Hill has barbers of its own, and a good local one is worth keeping. But plenty of N10 residents already pass through Highgate on the way to the Northern line, and a cut on Archway Road fits neatly into that journey. This post covers how to get here, how long it takes, the best times to come, and how to make the visit count when you are travelling for it.

Why people travel for a barber at all

Most men pick the nearest shop until something goes wrong: a fade that does not match last time, a rushed beard, a different person every visit. At that point, ten extra minutes of travel becomes trivial compared with three weeks of a cut you do not like. The things that tend to justify the trip are consistent technique, time taken over the assessment, and a barber who remembers what you had last time.

The other reason is practical. If you commute from Highgate station, a barber on Archway Road is not a detour at all. You can book before work or on the way home and never make a separate trip.

Getting from Muswell Hill to Archway Road

The Highgate House is a corner building on Archway Road, about five minutes on foot from Highgate tube station. From Muswell Hill you have three sensible options.

Option Route Good for
Bus Routes including the 43 and 134 run from Muswell Hill Broadway down Muswell Hill Road to Archway Road Weekday mornings, rain, anyone with a buggy
Walk Down Muswell Hill Road, or through Highgate Wood and Queen’s Wood Weekends, dry days, combining with a coffee
Cycle Muswell Hill Road is downhill most of the way here, uphill home Quick trips; bring a lock

Bus routes and timings change, so check the TfL journey planner from your own street. If you live at the Alexandra Palace end of N10, the journey is longer than from the Broadway, and the bus is the obvious choice.

The woods route

On a dry weekend the walk through Highgate Wood is the nicest way to arrive at a barber we know of. It is mostly level until the final stretch toward the road, and your hair will not suffer for it. Allow a little longer than the map suggests if you are walking with children or a dog, and avoid it straight after heavy rain unless you like muddy shoes.

When to come

Travelling for a cut works best if you time it rather than squeeze it in. A few patterns that suit N10 life:

  • After the school drop-off. Mid-morning on a weekday tends to be calmer than lunchtime or Saturday.
  • On the way to or from the tube. If you take the Northern line from Highgate, an early or end-of-day slot adds very little to your commute.
  • Saturday morning, booked ahead. The most popular time for most barbers. If Saturday is the only time you can do, book it a week out rather than the night before.
  • Before an event. Two to five days before a wedding, interview or photograph gives the cut time to settle. The day before is fine for a tidy; the morning of is a gamble.

Booking is by email for now while online booking is set up. Tell us the service and the day, and we reply with times. Our full post on walk-ins versus appointments explains why booking ahead saves you a wasted trip.

Making a longer trip worth it

If you are coming further than round the corner, it pays to get more done in one visit and to make the visit itself efficient.

  1. Combine services. If you wear a beard, book the haircut and beard work together so both are shaped as one look. A hot towel shave takes 20 to 30 minutes and can sit alongside a cut too.
  2. Bring your brief. Every visit starts with an assessment, where the barber looks at your hair and what you need and makes recommendations. Bring one or two photos, including a side view, and know what you did not like about your last cut.
  3. Think about the next date before you leave. If the cut works, book the next one at the counter. Fades want two to three weeks, scissor cuts four to six.
  4. Arrive with dry, unstyled hair. Heavy product hides how your hair naturally falls, which is exactly what the barber needs to see.

If you find briefing a barber awkward, our guide on how to tell your barber exactly what you want gives you the vocabulary.

What the Highgate Cuts team does

Highgate Cuts is on the ground floor of The Highgate House. The work covers skin fades and other fade heights, full scissor cuts, beard trims and shaping, and hot towel shaves with a straight razor. Downstairs, in a separate private studio, Artem Olekhnovych runs 1-1 personal training, which some clients pair with a cut on the same morning. The full service list is on the barber page.

We have not published prices yet, so check the barber menu or email us. If you are deciding between us and somewhere closer to home, the honest answer is to try one cut, judge it at week two, and keep whichever barber gives you the better grow-out. You can read more about our barbers in Highgate or the building as a whole on The Highgate House homepage.

Other neighbours we see

Muswell Hill is one of several areas within easy reach. Crouch End is a similar distance in the other direction, and we have written a separate note for Crouch End residents. Highgate village, Archway and Hampstead round out the regulars.

Questions we get asked

How long does it take to get from Muswell Hill?

From the Broadway, a short bus ride, or a walk of the kind most people do for fun on a Sunday. Check the TfL planner from your door, since it depends on where in N10 you start.

Is there parking?

Archway Road is a busy main road with restrictions. If you drive, check the signs and the local council’s parking rules before you set off; the bus is usually easier.

Do you cut children’s hair?

Ask when you email. Tell us the age and what the child is used to, and we will tell you what works.

Can I book a cut and a training session on the same day?

Yes. Training is coached 1-1 with Artem downstairs and is booked by email the same way.
